Aloe vera (Aloe vera Linne) extract (AVE) reduces fat accumulation by inhibiting adipogenesis in 3T3-L1 adipocytes

Abstract
Obesity is a global health concern that has given rise to many severe diseases such as T2DM, cardiovascular disease, and dyslipidemia. With the increasing prevalence of obesity, the need for anti-obesity bioactive compounds has received increasing attention. Aloe vera Linne is well-known for its wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fungal properties. To prove the anti-obesity effect of Aloe vera extract (AVE), we estimated the anti-lipogenic effect and anti-adipogenic effects of AVE. AVE significantly reduced DPPH radical activity at concentrations of 25 and 50 ¥ìg/mL. With all concentrations, AVE significantly inhibited lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes at all the concentrations tested. To elucidate the anti-obesity mechanism, we measured the lipogenic proteins and adipogenic protein levels. AVE did not alter lipogenic proteins, including SCD1, FAS, and ACC1. On the other hand, AVE significantly prohibited adipogenesis by reducing C/EBP¥á and SREBP1c. To summarize, AVE had an anti-adipogenic effect by modulating C/EBP¥á and SREBP1c.
